But cars are also savage with the burble of the exhaust note and the growl of a motor running through the gears. Beautifully savage is what welled up from the deep of my heart as a young man. Who wouldn’t feel called by that? Plus, being old enough to own and drive a car- especially a Muscle Car, was a rite of passage to become a man.
Now, we have very few things in our society that clearly dictate when you transition from a child to an adult, but driving your own car was certainly one of them. There’s a certain amount of freedom and responsibility to it, like the freedom of self-expression. Because how you saw yourself then was determined by what you drove and how you made it yours.
